Windows or Linux?
Windows or Linux? We normally install Linux "Mint" on recycled computers - for a variety of reasons, not least because it's free, very like Windows, and we prefer it. If, however, you would prefer Windows then this can be installed locally by "iFixLocal" for a discounted rate for our clients of £40 (July 2023). Note - Linux Mint (but not Ubuntu) can be installed on Windows or Apple Mac.
Note, we have a very few Apple MacBooks - if you are a MacBook user then please ask.
Computability as at 1st February 2024 - Report for IWPCUG AGM
Since the Ukrainian crisis Computability has been mainly concerned with passing on laptops to Ukrainian refugees. By the end of 2022 we had supplied 83 laptops and by the end of 2023 this had risen by a further 19. Nine laptops and several printers went to Odessa via Nigel Watson and his personal missions to Ukraine. (Actually by the end of 2023 over 100).
Over the last year we received 41 various items including very old laptops, monitors and printers, much of which was only suitable for recycling. Currys are very good at taking old kit and have proved a useful resource.
We have in stock now only a handful of laptops and a few Android tablets. The rate of supply of laptops has declined considerably - only one or two items a month, if that.
The price of reconditioned SSD's has fallen to about £10 per 128Gb unit which has helped greatly. We usually supply laptops with Linux Mint installed. Full details of our operation are on this website here.
